Australia Thrashes England

Australia triumphed over England in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Trent Bridge, securing a seven-wicket win and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. England, after a promising start, posted a total of 315 in 49.4 overs, with standout performances from Ben Duckett, who scored 95 off 91 balls, and Will Jacks, who added 62 off 56. However, Australia's bowlers, particularly Marnus Labuschagne (3-39) and Adam Zampa (3-49), managed to stifle England’s momentum, leading to a collapse from 213-2 to 315 all out.

In response, Australia chased down the target with ease, thanks to a breathtaking unbeaten 154 from Travis Head. His innings, supported by Marnus Labuschagne's 77, ensured Australia reached 317-3 in just 44 overs, sealing the game with 36 balls to spare. Head's innings not only marked the highest ODI score by an Australian batter in England but also guided Australia to their most successful ODI chase in the country.

Despite an encouraging innings from England’s top order, their inability to sustain pressure, particularly against spin, cost them the game. Labuschagne, who contributed both with the ball and the bat, played a pivotal role, removing Duckett and Harry Brook in quick succession. Zampa, playing his 100th ODI, further tightened the screws as Australia restricted England's middle and lower order.

Jacob Bethell added a useful 35 to push England beyond the 300 mark, but it was not enough on a ground known for high scores. Brydon Carse missed a tough one-handed chance to dismiss Head early, a moment that allowed the Australian opener to capitalise and carry his team to a comfortable win.

With this victory, Australia extended their ODI winning streak to 13 matches. England will look to bounce back and level the series when they meet again at Headingley on Saturday.
