England head coach Brendon McCullum has acknowledged that Jacob Bethell's performances in the Test series against New Zealand have created a selection dilemma for the team. The 21-year-old stepped in as a makeshift option during wicketkeeper Jamie Smith’s paternity leave, batting at number three despite limited experience in that role.
Bethell seized his opportunity with three impressive half-centuries, including a top score of 76 in England’s loss in the final Test at Hamilton. His efforts made him the second England batter, after Sir Alastair Cook, to register three scores of 50 or more in a series before turning 22. McCullum described this situation as a "good headache," highlighting the depth of talent in the squad.
Initially, Smith's absence was expected to be filled by Jordan Cox, but a late injury reshuffle saw Ollie Pope take the gloves, with Bethell promoted up the order. Bethell responded with scores of 50*, 96, and 76, all in the second innings, solidifying his case for further consideration.
Although captain Ben Stokes has previously indicated a return to the original line-up when Smith becomes available, McCullum hinted Bethell’s form may prompt a rethink ahead of England's next Test against Zimbabwe in May. Discussions could also involve Zak Crawley, whose struggles in New Zealand highlighted potential vulnerabilities.
Reflecting on 2024, McCullum and Stokes celebrated the team's successes, including a series win in New Zealand, while looking forward to challenges like hosting India and the Ashes in 2025. Stokes summed up the team's mindset, emphasising their passion for showcasing their abilities on the global stage.
