David Warner has reclaimed his role as captain of Sydney Thunder following Cricket Australia’s recent decision to lift his leadership ban. The 37-year-old cricketer, previously suspended from cricket for a year and barred from leadership roles due to the 2018 ball-tampering incident, saw his ban lifted last month, allowing him to step back into the captaincy.
Warner, who initially led the Thunder in 2011, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to captain the team again this season. He shared that returning to lead the squad feels especially meaningful, as he was involved with the team from its early days.
Trent Copeland, the general manager of Sydney Thunder, described Warner’s appointment as a significant moment for the club. He noted that Warner’s role extends beyond the field, emphasising the impact of his leadership in mentoring young players and fostering their growth both on and off the pitch.
The 2024 Big Bash League kicks off on December 15, marking Warner's much-anticipated return to a leadership role.
