Dominant Start for Oval Invincibles as The Hundred Season Kicks Off

Oval Invincibles secured a commanding victory at The Oval in the opening match of the fourth year of The Hundred. The Birmingham Phoenix, who batted first following Moeen Ali's decision after winning the toss, struggled against the pace duo of Saqib Mahmood and Mohammad Amir. This formidable pair dismantled the Phoenix's batting lineup, leaving them reeling at 10 for four within just 17 deliveries.

Both Amir and Mahmood claimed two wickets each. Earlier in the day, Amanda-Jade Wellington had impressed with three wickets for nine runs in the women's game for the Invincibles. Following her lead, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa took three wickets for just 11 runs.

Despite the efforts of Jacob Bethell and Benny Howell to stabilise Birmingham Phoenix's innings, their final score of 89 was insufficient. In response, the Invincibles, who are the defending men's champions, chased down the target with ease, securing an eight-wicket victory with 31 balls to spare. Captain Sam Billings contributed with some late aggressive batting, while Tawanda Muyeye entertained the crowd of 23,621 with a quick 23 off 14 balls.

Reflecting on the game, Zampa expressed satisfaction with the team's start and appreciated the thrill of playing in The Hundred, noting that it feels familiar to Twenty20 cricket despite its unique rules.

In the women's match, Paige Scholfield's dazzling 71 helped the Invincibles secure a 45-run win over Birmingham Phoenix. Taking on a new role at the top of the order in the absence of Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu, Scholfield formed a crucial partnership with England's Alice Capsey, who scored 52. The pair added 90 runs for the second wicket, propelling their team to a formidable total of 150, despite a late flurry of wickets.

Defending their score, the Invincibles took early control of the game, reducing the Phoenix to 32 for three, effectively sealing their fate. Although New Zealand captain Sophie Devine and Amy Jones showed some resistance, the Invincibles' bowlers, particularly leg-spinner Jade Wellington, proved too dominant. Scholfield expressed her excitement and nerves about opening for the first time, crediting Lauren Winfield-Hill for guiding her through the initial stages.
