England's Jon Lewis is 'learning' from Australia's Alyssa Healy ahead of the Ashes

England coach Jon Lewis says he is learning from Australia captain Alyssa Healy in the Women's Premier League with less than a year to go until the Ashes.

Lewis and Healy are the coach and captain of UP Warriorz respectively.

The women's Ashes will be played in Australia in early 2025, with the men's version to follow later that year.

Lewis and Healy collaborated during last year's inaugural season of the WPL, before the women's Ashes held during the English summer.

Wicketkeeper Healy captained Australia in that series following former captain Meg Lanning's withdrawal from the team. The series ended in a draw with both teams scoring 8 points each. England put up a strong fight against the world's best team.

Lanning has retired from international cricket, and Healy has become the permanent skipper. Tahlia McGrath, the Australian vice-captain, also joins Lewis at the Warriorz.

Former England seamer Lewis said:

"I would coach a little differently in this franchise than what I would with England. As a coach, you have to flex your style to suit the group of people you're with. My sense is I am learning more about them than they are learning about me."

Last year's Women's Ashes in England attracted a record-breaking total of 110,000 spectators. This included the Test match, three T20s, and three one-day internationals.

In 2022, the women's Ashes will be played separately from the men's. This will be the first time since England won the women's version down under in 2008.

Lewis will depart from the Warriorz early to join England for their tour of New Zealand.

The series has been planned for some time, but the late scheduling of the WPL has caused a conflict. The final in India on 17 March comes just two days before the first T20 between New Zealand and England in Dunedin.

Four players - Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, Sophie Ecclestone, and Danielle Wyatt - have opted to stay in the WPL and skip the first three T20s in the five-match series, although Lewis is due to join the England squad on 12 March. Two other WPL players not currently included in England's T20 plans are Issy Wong and Kate Cross.
