Gavin Hoey Joins Ireland's Test Squad for Zimbabwe Clash

Ireland has named uncapped leg spinner Gavin Hoey in their 14-member squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Zimbabwe, set to begin on July 25 in Belfast. Hoey is the only new inclusion in a squad otherwise composed of familiar faces from Ireland's previous red-ball matches.

The 22-year-old earned his selection through impressive performances in domestic cricket across various formats. Hoey's wrist spin adds to Ireland's slow bowling options, alongside veteran Andy McBrine and young talent Matthew Humphreys. This Test against Zimbabwe marks Ireland's second home game in the longest format, following their debut Test against Pakistan in 2018.

Ireland Squad:

- Andrew Balbirnie (c)

- Mark Adair

- Curtis Campher

- Gavin Hoey

- Graham Hume

- Matthew Humphreys

- Andy McBrine

- Barry McCarthy

- James McCollum

- PJ Moor

- Paul Stirling

- Harry Tector

- Lorcan Tucker

- Craig Young

National selector Andrew White expressed optimism about the inclusion of the two inexperienced spinners, Humphreys and Hoey. He acknowledged Humphreys' tough initiation into international cricket, especially in longer formats, and highlighted Hoey's potential despite his lack of experience at the highest level. White supported the young players and anticipated their success.

White noted that Humphreys made his Test debut in Sri Lanka, where he faced challenges against skilled spin players in the subcontinent. Humphreys had admitted to experiencing a loss of form and confidence but worked hard to regain his standing. His performances for Ireland Wolves and Emerging Ireland, including a 10-wicket haul against West Indies Academy, earned him a recall.

White praised Hoey's talent as a leg spinner, emphasising his ability to spin the ball both ways, which provides a valuable wicket-taking option. Hoey has been on the selectors' radar for some time and is capable of playing in all three formats. This opportunity allows him to acclimate to the Test squad environment.
