Glamorgan claimed their second One-Day Cup victory in four years, defeating Somerset by 15 runs in a match shortened from 50 to 20 overs.
Sam Northeast anchored Glamorgan's innings with a crucial 63 off 49 balls, with support from Billy Root, who contributed 39 runs. The team set a formidable total of 186-7.
Somerset’s chase began slowly, but captain Sean Dickson injected hope with a brisk 44 from 20 balls. However, Glamorgan’s bowlers held their nerve, restricting Somerset to 171-6 and securing the win.
Despite a wash-out on the first day and another bleak weather forecast, play miraculously started on time at Trent Bridge, with the captains agreeing to a 20-over format. The game took place in surreal conditions in front of a sparse crowd, as both teams featured players not involved in The Hundred. Somerset fielded a youthful side, missing six key players from their T20 Blast final squad, while Glamorgan left out Mason Crane and Chris Cooke.
Alfie Ogborne made an immediate impact, taking two wickets in his first over, dismissing Kiran Carlson and Tom Bevan back-to-back, reducing Glamorgan to 8-2. Will Smale quickly revived the innings, smashing 28 off 14 balls before a stunning catch from Sean Dickson off Kasey Aldridge ended his quickfire knock.
Colin Ingram fell for 11, leaving Glamorgan struggling at 71-4 halfway through their innings. However, Root’s two pulled sixes and Northeast’s calm approach shifted the momentum, with the pair putting together a 78-run partnership. Northeast’s composed 50 came off 39 deliveries before Root was dismissed by George Thomas, who impressed with figures of 2-23.
Timm van der Gugten added a quickfire 26 from just nine balls, with 17 runs coming from the final over, helping Glamorgan reach a competitive total.
Somerset’s reply saw George Thomas run out for 13 after a mix-up with Andy Umeed, who fought back with a useful 45. However, when Lewis Goldsworthy was caught for 11, and Umeed feathered a catch to Smale off Andy Gorvin, Somerset found themselves in trouble at 89-4 after 13 overs.
Dickson, surprisingly batting at six, launched a counterattack alongside teenager Archie Vaughan, bringing the required run rate down. But just as Somerset’s hopes were rising, Dickson mistimed a reverse sweep off Gorvin, falling to a catch at short third man.
Left with too much to do, Vaughan (32) couldn’t turn the tide. Jamie McIlroy bowled a tight 19th over, and Dan Douthwaite wrapped things up to seal Glamorgan’s victory.
