Hampshire Criticised Over Participation in the GSL

Hampshire Cricket Club faces criticism for participating in the Global Super League (GSL), a T20 tournament in Guyana sponsored by oil giant ExxonMobil. The event’s sponsorship has been labelled a "sportswashing vehicle" by environmental campaigners, who highlight the contradiction with Hampshire's public commitment to sustainability.

The club, which plays at the Utilita Bowl, recently promoted its installation of over 1,000 solar panels, claiming to be the "greenest international cricket venue." However, environmental activists argue that partnering with ExxonMobil undermines these efforts.

Etienne Stott, Olympic gold medallist and Extinction Rebellion activist, condemned the association, stating:

“It’s perverse for ExxonMobil to sponsor a cricket tournament in a country at severe risk from climate change. Hampshire risks serious reputational damage by aligning with such a blatant sportswashing effort.”

Joe Cooke, a former professional cricketer and environmental advocate, added:

“Cricket relies on stable environmental conditions, yet continues to accept sponsorship from industries driving the climate crisis. The sport should set an example by distancing itself from such partnerships.”

ExxonMobil’s involvement in cricket extends beyond the GSL, as it sponsors the Guyana Amazon Warriors and has links to the Caribbean Premier League. Additionally, the International Cricket Council recently renewed a partnership with Saudi oil company Aramco, drawing further scrutiny.

Chris Britt-Searle of The Next Test, a climate awareness group, called for cricketers and fans to speak out:

“This is an opportunity for the cricketing community to reject fossil fuel sponsorships. Players and fans can make it clear that this isn’t acceptable.”

Despite the backlash, Hampshire Cricket Club has declined to comment on their participation in the GSL, which runs from November 26 to December 6. Critics hope the controversy sparks broader conversations about the sport’s reliance on fossil fuel funding.
