ICC Launches Review of T20 World Cup 2024 and Announces Key Decisions

The ICC has announced a comprehensive review of the T20 World Cup 2024, establishing a panel of three board directors—Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khawaja—to oversee the investigation and deliver findings later this year.

Earlier, it was reported concerns regarding the expenditure on the US leg of the tournament and the organisation of the Caribbean segment. This prompted the ICC to initiate the review during its annual conference in Colombo from July 19 to 22, attended by all 108 members. The three-member panel will engage an independent consultancy to conduct the review before reporting back to the board.

In other developments, the ICC approved the expansion of the Women's T20 World Cup to 16 teams by 2030. The inaugural tournament in 2009 featured eight teams, increasing to ten by 2016. The upcoming 2024 Women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh will also have ten teams, with the 2026 edition expanding to 12 teams. The cut-off date for qualification for the 2026 tournament is set for October 31, 2024, ahead of the expansion to 16 teams in 2030.

For the Men's T20 World Cup in 2026, the ICC outlined the allocation of the eight regional qualifying spots: two teams each from Africa and Europe, one from the Americas, and three combined from Asia and East Asia Pacific (EAP). Previously, Asia had two spots, and EAP had one.

Additionally, the ICC has issued formal notices to USA Cricket and Cricket Chile for non-compliance with ICC membership criteria. Both organisations have 12 months to address these issues. The ICC stated that neither member currently has an adequate governance and administrative structure. The ICC Americas office will assist Cricket Chile in resolving their non-compliance. Meanwhile, a normalisation committee comprising board and management representatives will be established to oversee USA Cricket's compliance roadmap, with the ICC reserving the right to suspend or expel members for ongoing non-compliance.
