India’s Stars to Watch in a Renewed Rivalry with Australia

The fierce rivalry between India and Australia remains one of cricket’s defining contests, as the two nations consistently vie for supremacy across all formats. Over the past decade, they have been dominant in Test cricket, with the best win percentages among all teams. Both sides currently top the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, a continuation of their rivalry that culminated in Australia’s emphatic 209-run victory in the WTC final earlier this year.

While Australia has flourished under a period of renewal, India faces challenges. Despite holding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the last decade with four consecutive series wins, cracks in the Indian team are starting to show, highlighted by a recent 3-0 Test series loss to New Zealand at home. With key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli entering the twilight of their careers, India is undergoing a period of transition.

As India gears up for a five-match Test series in Australia – their first since 1991-92 – these five players could shape their campaign:

1. Yashasvi Jaiswal

The 22-year-old opener is touted as the next great Indian batter, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, both of whom made their mark on their first tours to Australia. Since his debut in July 2023, Jaiswal has amassed 1,407 runs in 14 matches at an average of 56.28, including two double centuries against England. Known for his attacking style, his biggest challenge will be adapting to Australia’s bouncier pitches, having struggled in South Africa earlier this year.

2. Rishabh Pant

A game-changer with the bat, Pant is no stranger to success in Australia, where he has been instrumental in India’s past two series wins. The 27-year-old has made an impressive comeback after an 18-month absence due to a car accident. With 46.88 as his average in five matches since returning, Pant’s fearless approach could be pivotal in neutralizing Australia’s bowlers.

3. Akash Deep

With Mohammed Shami sidelined, Akash Deep is poised to fill the void as India’s third pacer. Known for his fiery spells, Akash made headlines on his debut against England and has since taken 10 wickets in five Tests. Australian pitches are expected to suit his pace and swing, allowing him to shine alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

4. Dhruv Jurel

Jurel, a 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, might find himself in the XI as a specialist batter due to injuries and form concerns in India’s top order. His ability to perform under pressure was evident in India A’s recent tour of Australia, where he impressed with scores of 80 and 68. Jurel’s composure and adaptability could prove invaluable against a formidable Australian attack.

5. Jasprit Bumrah

Returning to full fitness, Bumrah is set to lead the side in Rohit Sharma’s absence. One of the world’s most lethal bowlers, he has been a key figure in India’s past series victories in Australia, taking 21 wickets at an average of 17 on his first tour. As captain, Bumrah will aim to inspire his side while reaffirming his leadership credentials for the post-Rohit era.

India’s young talents and seasoned stars will be tested in this crucial series, as they seek to overcome challenges and defend their dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
