Bethell scored an unbeaten 37-ball half-century in the second innings, hitting eight fours and a six. However, it was his determined 10 off 34 balls in the first innings, against a potent pace attack on a lively pitch, that caught the attention of former England captain Michael Atherton. Reflecting on Bethell’s debut, Atherton noted his calm approach against Tim Southee and Matt Henry, describing him as a player who "looked like he belonged" in the Test arena.
