Leg-spinner Jafer Chohan has been selected for his debut in the England squad for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies, with Jos Buttler making his return as captain.
Chohan, 22, has impressed with his performance in the T20 Blast, claiming 22 wickets in 23 matches for Yorkshire, including a standout 17 wickets across 10 games in 2024. He also holds the distinction of being the first player from the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) to be chosen for the national team.
Buttler, who has been sidelined since August due to a calf injury, will take back his leadership duties after Harry Brook and Phil Salt stepped in to captain the one-day international and T20 squads against Australia in September. This will be Buttler’s first series as captain after a review of England's team structure, following head coach Matthew Mott’s resignation post-T20 World Cup in June.
The tour kicks off with the first of three one-day internationals against West Indies on October 31 in Antigua, followed by a five-match T20 series. The same squad will compete in both formats, featuring uncapped players John Turner, a fast bowler from Hampshire, and Warwickshire all-rounder Dan Mousley alongside Chohan.
Two more players, whose names are yet to be disclosed, will join the squad from England's Test side after their tour of Pakistan concludes on October 28.
England recently drew their T20 series with Australia but were edged out 3-2 in the one-day internationals, as they continue to rebuild after Mott's departure, Moeen Ali's retirement, and the absence of key players like Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Mark Wood.
Marcus Trescothick will assume the role of head coach for the West Indies tour, with Brendon McCullum set to take over in January 2025.
