Joe Root and Nat Sciver-Brunt Among Nominees

Previous winners Joe Root and Nat Sciver-Brunt are once again contenders for the 2024 Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) Player of the Year awards.

Root, who claimed the PCA men's player of the year title in 2021 and was named young player of the year in 2012, is shortlisted alongside England teammate Gus Atkinson, Hampshire's all-rounder Liam Dawson, and Glamorgan’s South African star Colin Ingram.

Sciver-Brunt, a two-time women's player of the year (2017 and 2022), is joined in the women's shortlist by Northern Diamonds’ Hollie Armitage, The Blaze’s Kathryn Bryce, and Paige Scholfield of South East Stars.

These shortlists, which recognise both domestic and international performances, were determined by fellow professional players ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled for 1 October.

Root, now 33, has enjoyed a stellar year, amassing 1,262 international runs and surpassing Alastair Cook’s England record by securing his 34th Test century.

Atkinson has been a standout player since making his international debut, while Dawson, currently leading the PCA men's domestic overall MVP standings, is looking to retain the title he won last year. Ingram has also been in outstanding form, racking up nearly 2,000 runs during the summer.

On the women's side, Sciver-Brunt earned the title of Women's ODI Player of the Summer, amassing 233 runs from four innings and finishing as the top scorer in The Hundred with 303 runs.

Meanwhile, Armitage made her England debut and was the second-highest run-scorer in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Bryce, representing Scotland, led the batting as The Blaze clinched the Charlotte Edwards Cup, and Scholfield impressed with her batting, securing her place in the England squad.

Last year's winners were Tammy Beaumont and Harry Brook, and this year's awards also spotlight emerging talents under the age of 24, similar to Root’s recognition 12 years ago.

In the men's young player category, debutants Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Jordan Cox (Essex), and Jamie Smith (Surrey) are in the running. For the women's young player award, South East Stars duo Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Ryana MacDonald-Gay are nominated, alongside Thunder’s Seren Smale.

The 2024 PCA awards will highlight the best performances from the cricketing world and recognise the sport's rising stars.
