Jofra Archer Eyes Return to England’s Pace Attack for Ashes

Jofra Archer is eager to join Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson in England's high-speed bowling attack against Australia next winter, as shared by Ben Stokes.

Stokes is thrilled about the prospect of pairing Wood and Atkinson, who recently took 12 wickets on his debut at Lord’s, for the first time in the upcoming Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge. He mentioned that England is meticulously planning Archer's comeback for next year.

Stokes pointed out the importance of adding more speed to England’s bowling lineup in preparation for the Ashes. He noted that Josh Tongue, Olly Stone, and John Turner are also being considered. Stokes explained that pace is a significant weapon, making batsmen like Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne rethink their strategies.

While discussing Gus Atkinson's performance, Stokes praised his skill and speed, noting that he bowls between 87 and 90 mph with great control and swing. He also highlighted Mark Wood's exceptional ability to combine pace with accuracy and swing, which makes him a rare talent.

Stokes expressed hope for Archer's return to Test cricket, acknowledging his passion for playing for England, despite his recent struggles with elbow and back injuries. Stokes mentioned that watching Archer in the World Cup was encouraging and that they aim to manage his return carefully to extend his career.

Wood's pace was crucial in England's recovery to a 2-2 draw in the Ashes last summer. He replaced the retired James Anderson in the XI for the second Test against the West Indies. Atkinson has been promoted to take the new ball alongside Chris Woakes, who is earning his 50th cap. Atkinson, known for his expertise with the older ball, has not taken the new ball for three years at Surrey.

Stokes confirmed that Atkinson and Woakes would take the new ball, noting Atkinson's effectiveness with the Dukes ball. Stokes and Wood are expected to bowl once the ball starts swinging after 10-12 overs.

Ben Duckett is set to play on his home ground, although his fiancée is expecting their first child soon. If the baby arrives before the match, Dan Lawrence will step in to open.

The West Indies will field an unchanged XI, with Shamar Joseph fit to play after a minor hamstring issue at Lord’s.
