Before stepping onto the MCG for their WBBL final, the Melbourne Renegades players were reminded of their beloved teammate, Josie Dooley, who had a profound impact on their journey. Although not playing in the tournament due to a stroke she suffered while on holiday in Hawaii, her presence remained a source of inspiration for the team. At the start of the season, the Renegades had been dismissed as bottom contenders, yet they achieved a remarkable victory, fuelled by a sense of purpose beyond the sport itself.
Josie, while undergoing a lengthy recovery, had her shirt displayed in the MCG rooms, carrying the encouraging message, “Don’t fuck it up,” written by her. Renegades coach Simon Helmot shared how emotional he felt about Josie’s influence, noting her attendance at crucial matches and her role in team meetings. He highlighted that cricket encompasses much more than the game; it connects people through their challenges.
Captain Sophie Molineux echoed these sentiments, indicating that Josie represented the very essence of the Renegades. She emphasised that Josie’s story is an inspiration not just for her teammates but for anyone aware of her journey. Molineux remarked on how vital Josie’s involvement was, asserting that her spirit was woven into the fabric of their championship season, making her an integral part of their success.
