Kent kept their hopes alive in Division One of the County Championship after a hard-fought draw against Hampshire on a tense final day at Canterbury.
In their second innings, Kent were bowled out for 338, with Jack Leaning contributing exactly 100 and Harry Finch adding 79 in a crucial 149-run partnership. Kyle Abbott took 4-66 for Hampshire, while Mohammad Abbas claimed 3-69.
Hampshire were left needing 143 runs from just nine overs, but after 2.4 overs, bad light ended play with them at 24-1, bringing their improbable chase to a halt just before 18:00 BST.
Despite the draw, Kent remains 36 points away from safety with only two games remaining and a maximum of 48 points still up for grabs. Meanwhile, Hampshire sits in third place, 27 points behind table leaders Surrey.
Starting the day at 70-0, still trailing by 126, Kent faced an early setback when Tawanda Muyeye edged the fourth ball of the morning to second slip off Abbott and departed for 46. Abbott followed up by removing Ben Compton for 25, again caught by Toby Albert, while Abbas struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Daniel Bell-Drummond for 23 and Joe Denly for five.
Abbott then claimed Joey Evison for 11 with a low slip catch by James Vince, leaving Leaning and Finch to carry the burden. The pair survived until lunch, taking Kent to 145-5.
The afternoon session saw both Leaning and Finch defy Hampshire's short-pitched bowling strategy, comfortably handling a barrage of bouncers. Leaning brought up his century with a single off Abbott but was soon dismissed, ending a record-breaking sixth-wicket stand for Kent against Hampshire.
Following Leaning’s departure, Charlie Stobo (17), Matt Parkinson (seven), and George Garrett (four) quickly followed. However, Jas Singh held on for 27 balls in a crucial last-wicket stand with Finch, which lasted 11 overs. The partnership finally ended when Finch, trying to hook James Fuller, was caught by Vince at first slip.
With bad light and nine fielders spread across the boundary, Hampshire's run chase became a mere formality, especially as rain returned to halt proceedings.
