Gary Kirsten has stepped down as Pakistan's limited-overs coach, ending his tenure just six months after his appointment. The 56-year-old former South African batsman, who signed a two-year contract in April, leaves his role amid reported friction with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over selection matters.
Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s Test coach since April, will now oversee the white-ball squad for their upcoming series in Australia, set to begin next week. Kirsten’s relationship with the PCB had reportedly soured due to disagreements surrounding team selection.
Meanwhile, Gillespie recently revealed before Pakistan’s third Test against England that he no longer has a voice in selection decisions, describing his position instead as a “match day strategist.” Following Pakistan’s heavy defeat to England in the first Test, the PCB revamped its selection committee to address team performance.
Kirsten, who previously led India to a 50-over World Cup victory in 2011 and also coached his home team, South Africa, has had extensive experience with various T20 franchises, including those in the Indian Premier League.
Pakistan’s series against Australia will feature three ODIs, beginning on November 4 in Melbourne, followed by three T20 matches. The PCB has handed Gillespie the responsibility of leading the limited-overs squad for this series, following Pakistan’s 2-1 victory over England in the Test series.
