Lockie Ferguson has been sidelined from New Zealand's upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka after sustaining a calf injury. Adam Milne has been selected as his replacement in the squad.
Ferguson incurred the injury during his impactful performance in the second T20I, which secured New Zealand’s five-run win and levelled the series at 1-1. The 33-year-old had to leave the field after feeling discomfort in his second over, though he had already achieved a remarkable hat-trick in those 12 balls.
Ferguson is set to return home for further scans to assess the injury’s severity and determine his recovery timeline.
Expressing disappointment, head coach Gary Stead praised Ferguson’s brief but impactful performance, noting his significant leadership role in the squad. Stead acknowledged that it’s tough to lose a key player early in a tour, yet he remains optimistic about Ferguson's quick recovery. He also welcomed Milne as a fitting replacement, citing his speed and experience.
The first ODI match against Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place in Dambulla on Wednesday, November 13.
