In the Vitality County Championship Division Two clash at Northwood, Middlesex secured an eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire, propelled by Toby Roland-Jones' outstanding performance, which saw him claim 11 wickets across both innings.
Roland-Jones, the 36-year-old captain of Middlesex, added to his first-innings figures of 5-49 by taking 6-58 in the second innings, leading to Northamptonshire’s dismissal for 167 shortly after tea on the final day. This left Middlesex with a target of 111 runs to chase in a minimum of 25 overs, which they comfortably achieved, thanks in large part to Sam Robson's second half-century of the match.
Earlier in the day, Middlesex's first innings concluded with the loss of their last three wickets for just 14 runs, ending at 264. Leus Du Plooy top-scored with 71, while Ben Sanderson was the pick of the Northamptonshire bowlers, taking 6-64. With a narrow lead of 57 runs, Middlesex needed quick breakthroughs, and Roland-Jones delivered by trapping Ricardo Vasconcelos lbw for two.
Tom Helm then dismissed Emilio Gay, leaving Northamptonshire still trailing by 20 runs. Although Luke Procter survived a close lbw call from Roland-Jones, his partner George Bartlett was less fortunate, as he was caught at point off Henry Brookes. Soon after, Roland-Jones trapped Procter and bowled Prithvi Shaw, who was struggling with a finger injury sustained while fielding.
By the time Helm had Rob Keogh caught at slip, Northamptonshire had slumped to 104-6. Lewis McManus and Justin Broad attempted to stabilise the innings, adding 38 runs for the seventh wicket and using up 81 balls. However, Roland-Jones dismissed McManus with the final delivery before tea, secured his 10-wicket match haul by trapping Dominic Leech lbw, and then had Broad caught behind for 30.
Despite the modest target, Sanderson continued to challenge Middlesex, removing Mark Stoneman lbw and bowling Max Holden. However, Robson (64 not out) and Du Plooy (22 not out) guided Middlesex to a comfortable victory, ensuring their rise to second place in the Division Two standings.
