Nick Hockley to Step Down as Cricket Australia CEO

Nick Hockley will conclude his five-year tenure as Cricket Australia's chief executive at the end of the upcoming summer, stepping down in March next year.

On Tuesday, Cricket Australia announced that Hockley had informed the Board of his decision to step down as chief executive after the 2023-24 summer season.

“This decision was challenging, but with an exciting summer ahead and significant progress made on our five-year strategic plan, it's the right moment to seek new opportunities. This also allows ample time for the Board to find a new CEO to build on the strong foundation now established,” Hockley stated.

He emphasised that his focus remains on the upcoming season and ensuring a smooth transition for his successor. Hockley has been involved in Australian cricket for nearly 13 years, initially appointed as interim chief executive in June 2020 following Kevin Roberts' departure. He officially took on the role in May 2021, navigating the sport through the Covid-19 pandemic and handling significant events like Tim Paine’s resignation as Test captain and Justin Langer’s departure as head coach.

During Hockley's leadership, CA secured a seven-year broadcast rights deal worth $1.5 billion with Foxtel and Seven, as well as a $360 million rights deal with Disney Star for the Indian market. Last year, he played a key role in reaching a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Cricketers’ Association, which included substantial pay increases for professional female players.

Hockley was also pivotal in organising Australia’s first Test tour of Pakistan in 24 years, which saw Pat Cummins’ team win the series 1-0 in 2022. CA Chair Mike Baird confirmed that Hockley would remain in his role until a successor is appointed. Potential candidates include former NRL boss Todd Greenberg, CA’s new Chief of Cricket James Allsopp, Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson, Cricket Victoria chief executive Nick Cummins, Queensland Cricket’s Terry Svenson, and former WA Cricket boss Christina Matthews.

Baird praised Hockley's leadership, stating, “As CEO, Nick guided the sport through unprecedented challenges during the pandemic and achieved significant growth and stability. Under his leadership, several major deals have been secured for the next seven years, positioning the game for continued success."

He added that Hockley's decision allows for a smooth transition, and the process of finding his successor will begin shortly.
