Former Test cricketer Kurtis Patterson showcased his resilience and form in the Sheffield Shield, aiding New South Wales (NSW) in securing a draw against Queensland.
NSW began their second innings on Monday November 28 with a significant 167-run deficit. Patterson's composed knock of 66 led the team to 256 for 4, at which point both captains agreed to call off the game. Ollie Davies also made a notable contribution, scoring 88 with a cautious start that turned aggressive as the day progressed, ending when he was caught attempting a hook shot in the final session.
This result left both NSW and Queensland winless after three rounds, with each team drawing twice. However, for Patterson, this match marked a personal triumph. Once the captain of NSW just two seasons ago, Patterson had faced a period of uncertainty, appearing in only three Shield matches last season and being overlooked at the start of the 2024-25 campaign. Due to a shortage of players tied up with national duties, selectors brought him back to bat at No. 3.
Patterson, who had once feared for his first-class future, proved his value. He top-scored with 91 in the first innings and impressed again on Monday. His innings included six boundaries, highlighted by a stylish square-drive off Mitchell Swepson. He looked solid until play was briefly halted by rain, and on his return, a sharp delivery from Swepson snuck through his defences to bowl him.
Despite his dismissal, Patterson's effort, combined with the 117-run partnership he shared with Davies for the third wicket, had already ensured NSW's safety. Queensland's formidable first-innings total of 406 for 5 declared was weather-affected but included key performances from Jack Lovell, unbeaten on 146, and contributions from Sam Heazlett and Usman Khawaja.
Davies' innings was his standout performance of the summer thus far, setting him up as he joins the Australia A camp ahead of their clash with India A in Melbourne later in the week.
