Preview of the 2024 County Championship: How will 2024 function?

Many of the changes for the 2024 season will undo the alterations introduced in 2023.

The experiment of awarding five points for a draw was short-lived and has reverted to eight, while batting and bowling bonus points remain the same as last year.

Traditionalists will be pleased that County Championship matches will be played every month of the season, in response to demand from the public.

The campaign starts with eight consecutive rounds played from Friday to Monday each week across April and May.

After a break for T20 cricket, the season resumes with consecutive rounds in late June and early July, just before the start of England men's Test summer.

After last summer's absence of Championship cricket in August, there will be two rounds towards the end of the month this year.

The Hundred and One-Day Cup will again take up the first half of the month.

On Thursday, September 26, the final round of the Championship campaign begins.

Although unlikely to be widespread, hybrid pitches will be permitted for the first time in a one-year ECB trial.

Hybrid tracks, which are mostly grass but contain some synthetic fibres to prevent deterioration and allow more cricket, have only been used in white-ball cricket until now.

Another point to note is the return of the Kookaburra ball instead of the Dukes ball, with its usage increasing from two to four rounds.

The ECB aims to increase the experience of English players in facing or bowling with it, with an eye on the overseas Ashes series in 2025.
