Sophia Dunkley Leads Welsh Fire to Victory Over Manchester Originals in The Hundred

In the opening match of The Hundred women's competition at Old Trafford, Welsh Fire secured a seven-wicket win against Manchester Originals, thanks to a standout performance by England's Sophia Dunkley.

The Originals, batting first, had a promising start with a 58-run partnership between South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 37, and Australia's Beth Mooney. However, once Wolvaardt was dismissed, the team quickly collapsed from 58-0 to 86-6. Mooney was the only other batter in the top six to reach double figures, scoring 19. Captain Sophie Ecclestone provided a late boost with an unbeaten 27, helping the Originals to a total of 113-7.

In response, Welsh Fire began their chase with a strong 65-run stand between Dunkley and Tammy Beaumont, before Beaumont was dismissed for 31. Despite losing Hayley Matthews and Sarah Bryce in quick succession, reducing them to 73-3, Dunkley (69) steadied the ship. She, along with Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen (nine not out), guided the Fire to victory with an unbroken 44-run partnership, reaching their target with four balls remaining.

Dunkley expressed her satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting the importance of starting the competition with a win. Manchester Originals' captain Sophie Ecclestone acknowledged their struggles, particularly during the middle overs, where they failed to capitalise on scoring opportunities. She remained optimistic, emphasising the strength of their bowling unit and looking forward to their next match.

Welsh Fire captain Tammy Beaumont praised Dunkley's maturity and composure in leading the team to victory, noting the significance of starting the tournament with a win to build momentum.
