South Africa Stuns Australia in Cup Semi-Final

In a major upset at the Women's T20 World Cup in Dubai, South Africa knocked out six-time champions Australia with a commanding eight-wicket victory. The Proteas chased down a target of 135 with 16 balls to spare, dashing Australia’s hopes of making an eighth final appearance.

South Africa's Anneke Bosch led the charge with a brilliant unbeaten 74 from 48 balls, while captain Laura Wolvaardt contributed a composed 42. Their 96-run second-wicket stand left Australia struggling to keep up, with Wolvaardt later calling it "one of our biggest wins ever."

Australia's innings, restricted to 134-5, lacked momentum, with their batters failing to break free. Grace Harris and Georgia Wareham were dismissed early, while Beth Mooney’s steady 44 from 42 balls failed to lift the run-rate. Skipper Tahlia McGrath’s sluggish 27 from 33 balls further stalled Australia’s progress. Though Ellyse Perry (31 from 23) and Phoebe Litchfield (16 off nine) added some late runs, it wasn’t enough on a chasing-friendly pitch.

South Africa began their pursuit confidently, outpacing Australia’s powerplay total by reaching 43-1 in the first six overs. After Tazmin Brits fell for 15, Bosch and Wolvaardt took control, with Bosch hammering eight fours and a six in her match-winning knock. This performance secured South Africa’s second consecutive final appearance, following their 2023 campaign on home soil.

The second semi-final will feature New Zealand and West Indies on Friday, marking the first final in T20 or ODI World Cups without either Australia or England.

Reflecting on the victory, South African cricket writer Firdose Moonda noted the significance of the win, describing it as part of an incredible 18-month run of sporting success for the nation. Moonda highlighted South Africa’s resilience despite limited financial resources, and the team's ability to unite and inspire hope across the country.
