Stokes is taking on more bowling duties but will remain a specialist batsman

Just in time for England's T20 World Cup defence, the Test captain has returned to his all-rounder status.

Ben Stokes will not bowl in England's remaining three Tests in India, although he continued his return to full fitness with a 20-minute bowling session in Rajkot on Wednesday.

Stokes has been increasing his bowling workload on this tour after undergoing an operation on his left knee at the end of November. After conducting an initial review leading up to the second Test in Visakhapatnam, Stokes has been gradually increasing his bowling workload. He bowled three overs on Tuesday at approximately 70% intensity before a similar stint on Wednesday, a day before the third Test.

Stokes has confirmed that he will not be bowling in this series. The progress made at this early stage suggests that he is on track to play as an all-rounder in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place in the Caribbean and the United States in June. The current situation is positive, with small but consistent improvements.

Stokes confirmed that he will not bowl in this series, stating that he has promised his physio that he will not loosen up to bowl even if he feels well, as it would be an unnecessary risk.

The last time Stokes bowled in a competitive match was in the second Ashes Test at Lord's in June 2023. His participation in the 50-over World Cup was uncertain due to the state of his left knee. He came out of ODI retirement in August.

The 2019 hero's return did not lead to a successful world title defence, as England was knocked out in the group stages. A lack of balance in the XI was one of the many issues that emerged from a dismal campaign. This was not helped by Stokes only being able to operate as a batter.

Stokes will aim to make amends by defending the T20 World Cup after helping England win in 2022. The tournament is part of a busy 2024 for Stokes. He will also lead England in the home Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka before touring Pakistan and New Zealand before the year ends.

Stokes has already withdrawn from the IPL, having played for Chennai Super Kings last year, to manage his workload. He is satisfied with his physical progress, especially as the rest of his body readjusts to the demands of fast bowling.
