T20 Cricket World Cup - A team-by-team guide

All the information you require about the teams to get ready for the June tournament. Twenty countries, many of whom are competing for the first time, will compete in an expanded version of the T20 Cricket World Cup, which gets underway on June 2.

The defending champions, England, will be hoping that captain Jos Buttler's team performs better in the T20 World Cup defence than they did in the ODI Cricket World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

There will be four stages in the tournament: group, super 8, knockout, and final. It will be held in the United States and the West Indies. Here, PA Sport examines each squad in greater detail:

Group A, India

Captain: Rohit Sharma

Coach: Rahul Dravid

Danger man: Suryakumar Yadav

2022 result: Semi-finals

Prospects: Having lost the 50-over final at home in November, the supporters will settle for nothing less than victory. The wealthiest country in the game deserves a worldwide championship long overdue.

Pakistan

Captain: Babar Azam

Coach: Gary Kirsten

Danger man: Shaheen Shah Afridi

2022 result: Runner-up

Prospects: Will Kirsten, who was recently appointed, have enough time to establish herself on a side that has recently seen some somewhat stormy times? He takes over a highly skilled team with a streak of unpredictability.

Ireland

Captain: Paul Stirling

Coach: Heinrich Malan

Danger man: Josh Little

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: They will be aware that a repeat performance might be sufficient to get them to the Super 8s after they famously overcame Pakistan in the Caribbean during the 2007 World Cup.

Canada

Captain: Saad bin Zafar

Coach: Pubudu Dassanayake

Danger man: Kaleem Sana

2022 result: DNQ

Prospects: Although their first appearance in a worldwide event since 2011 is already somewhat of a win, they will definitely want to attend their matchup with their neighbours, the United States.

USA

Captain: Monank Patel

Coach: Stuart Law

Danger man: Corey Anderson

2022 result: DNQ

Prospects: Considerable work has gone into setting up the necessary infrastructure to act as co-hosts. For the field performances to really grab the American imagination as the organizers want, they must match that endeavour.

Group B, Australia

Captain: Mitchell Marsh

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Danger man: Travis Head

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: As the current Test and ODI world champions, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the three titles together. Last time out, they did not perform well at home, but they had quality in every area and a winning streak.

England

Captain: Jos Buttler

Coach: Matthew Mott

Danger man: Phil Salt

2022 result: Winners

Prospects: The current champions need to make an impression after their harrowing 50-over defence in India. During the IPL, an explosive batting group has been on fire, and the return of Jofra Archer should strengthen a weak bowling squad.

Namibia

Captain: Gerhard Erasmus

Coach: Pierre de Bruyn

Danger man: JJ Smit

2022 result: First round

Prospects: The Africans will be eager to demonstrate that they are among the most competitive associate nations on display after earning a spot in the competition for the third consecutive year. David Wiese, an experienced all-rounder, sets the high standard.

Oman

Captain: Aqib Ilyas

Coach: Duleep Mendis

Danger man: Kashyap Prajapati

2022 result: DNQ

Prospects: Won the Asia qualifying match in a super over following a draw with Nepal in the final. Some of their most reliable players may find age has caught up with them at the top level.

Scotland

Captain: Richie Berrington

Coach: Doug Watson

Danger man: George Munsey

2022 result: First round

Prospects: Fell short at the first hurdle the previous time, but with new leadership from South African Watson, they're back for more. Josh Davey, a veteran seamer who is still with Somerset, is absent, which is a major blow.

Group C, Afghanistan

Captain: Rashid Khan

Coach: Jonathan Trott

Danger man: Rashid Khan

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: They were defeated by both England and Pakistan at the ODI World Cup after going winless in Australia the previous time around. Now boast top-order hitters to back up a varied bowling attack.

New Zealand

Captain: Kane Williamson

Coach: Gary Stead

Danger man: Finn Allen

2022 result: Semi-finals

Prospects: Won in their group in 2022 but lost to Pakistan in the quarterfinals; they were always strong competitors. Though they might not have as many new players in the bowling assault, they do well as underdogs.

West Indies

Captain: Rovman Powell

Coach: Daren Sammy

Danger man: Nicholas Pooran

2022 result: First round

Prospects: The islanders, who were eliminated from the 50-over World Cup after failing to go past the group round two years prior, are eager to make a comeback. The home field advantage and abundance of powerful hitters work in favor of the two-time champions.

Papua New Guinea

Captain: Asadollah Vala

Coach: Tatenda Taibu

Danger man: Charles Amini

2022 result: First round

Prospects: They lost all three of their games in their previous appearance, thus winning the T20 World Cup is their first priority, but they are a far cry from their East Asia-Pacific pool.

Uganda

Captain: Brian Masaba

Coach: Abhay Sharma

Danger man: Alpesh Ramjani

2022 result: DNQ

Prospects: The Cranes, the last team to guarantee their participation in the competition, defeated Kenya in the African qualification and shocked favourites Zimbabwe. In whatever sport, the nation's fourth-ever World Cup team has already won.

Group D, South Africa

Captain: Aiden Markram

Coach: Rob Walter

Danger man: Heinrich Klaasen

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: Could this be the group to end the Proteas’ trophy drought? Misfortune usually finds them in World Cup cricket but on paper they are a well-balanced squad boasting multiple game-changers and strong depth.

Bangladesh

Captain: Najmul Hossain Shanto

Coach: Chandika Hathurusingha

Danger man: Shakib Al Hasan

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: The Tigers have never advanced past the group stages in eight T20 World Cups despite their constant presence. Although it might be difficult to end that run, the current crop will seek to make it to the Super 8s and proceed from there.

Sri Lanka

Captain: Wanindu Hasaranga

Coach: Chris Silverwood

Danger man: Wanindu Hasaranga

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: The Lankans, under the leadership of former England coach Silverwood, are a mysterious team that mainly depends on their captain, who is a perfect T20 package with his combination of mystery spin and six-hitting.

Netherlands

Captain: Scott Edwards

Coach: Ryan Cook

Danger man: Bas de Leede

2022 result: Group stage

Prospects: Hamstrung by the absence of experienced duo Colin Ackermann and Roelof van der Merwe, who remain with Durham and Somerset respectively. The memory of a famous win over South Africa at last year’s 50-over World Cup will spur them on.

Nepal

Captain: Rohit Paudel

Coach: Monty Desai

Danger man: Dipendra Singh Airee

Prospects: Won two of their first-round matches during their lone prior visit ten years ago, but they haven't advanced after then. They must be at the top of their game to prevent falling behind their rivals.
