Kane Williamson will not be part of New Zealand's squad for the second Test against India, scheduled to begin in Pune on October 24, as he continues recovering from a groin injury.
The New Zealand captain, who sustained the injury during last month’s tour of Sri Lanka, did not travel with the team to India. Instead, he remains home to focus on his rehabilitation. In his absence, Will Young stepped in at No. 3 during the first Test in Bengaluru, contributing scores of 33 and an unbeaten 48.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead provided an update on Williamson’s recovery, explaining that while the captain is progressing well, he is not yet fully fit. Stead expressed optimism about Williamson’s improvement in the coming days and hopes to have him ready for the third Test. He emphasised that the team is being cautious with his recovery and will give him ample time to prepare.
New Zealand currently leads the three-match Test series 1-0 after securing an eight-wicket victory in the first Test. Rachin Ravindra was named Player of the Match for his century in the first innings and an unbeaten 39 in the chase. Meanwhile, bowlers Matt Henry and Will O'Rourke played crucial roles, taking eight and seven wickets, respectively.
The New Zealand team arrived in Pune on Monday evening, with their first training session in the city scheduled for today.
