It was reported that Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, is slated to take on the role of head coach for the national team across all formats. Currently leading the One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads, he is set to assume his new responsibilities in Test cricket starting in April 2025. The announcement was made by Miles Bascombe, the CWI Director, during a Quarterly Press Conference held in St. Vincent on December 16, 2023.
Sammy, a celebrated two-time ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-winning captain, has been guiding the West Indies' white-ball formats since May 2023. He is expected to succeed Andre Coley as the Test head coach following the conclusion of the West Indies' current World Test Championship cycle. As it stands, the team finds itself at the bottom of the WTC25 standings, with a point percentage of 24.24%, eliminating their chances for the finale at Lord’s next year. They have a two-match away series against Pakistan scheduled from January 16 to 28, 2025.
At a press conference after the announcement, Sammy expressed his honour in representing the West Indies in this capacity, emphasising the new direction he envisions for the team. He also conveyed his excitement regarding the added responsibilities and the journey ahead, indicating his confidence in both himself and his team to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
