A cricket match is not just about the players on the field, it's also about the narrative spun by the commentators.

These individuals are crucial in bringing the game to life for millions of viewers around the world. So what exactly does a cricket commentator do?

A cricket commentator narrates the game, analysing and contextualising the action to create an engaging experience for viewers.

As the world of cricket evolves, so does the role of the commentator, cementing its position as an indispensable pillar in sports broadcasting.

Famous commentators

1. John Arlott

John Arlott, an Englishman from Basingstoke, Hampshire, began his cricket broadcasting career in 1946. By the time he retired in 1980, Arlott was a regular commentator on England's home matches. He was best known for the BBC's Test Match Special (TMS). Wisden described him as a poet at heart.

2. Geoffrey Boycott

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has made a name for himself in the commentary box with his typical Yorkshire accent and wit.

He is one commentator who isn't afraid to criticise the players. As with his playing days, his commentary has been controversial. However, his comments are often insightful and add a bit of spice to the commentary box.

3. Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar's love of technique, for which he was renowned during his playing days, is still evident today when he holds a microphone. Listening to his in-depth knowledge of the game is an education for any cricket fan. But not everything is serious when he is in the commentary box. His one-liners and humour are as classy as his straight drives.

He is one of the few commentators who isn't afraid to tell it like it is, even if it causes controversy.
