County cricket: Sussex prevails in a close match against Yorkshire, and Surrey triumphs once more

The drama unfolded at Hove as Sussex triumphed by 21 runs, as the Division One leaders defeated Worcestershire with relative ease.

James Wallace's countywide assemblage

Zak Crawley of Kent and England began his cricket career on a perfect May Sunday under the sun. The willowy opener's batting is either feast or famine and in his second innings at Taunton, he appeared ravenous following a run of poor results (67 runs from his first seven innings, including a duck in the first innings against Somerset). After being hauled out for 178 in response to Somerset's 554, Kent wanted him to continue. Rob Key was smiling somewhere when Crawley left the game before closing, having scored 238 off 267 balls.

Yorkshire lost their last four wickets for three runs in a nerve-wracking fourth-inning chase to try and win for the first time in six games, as they were defeated by a Sussex ram raid at Hove. Ollie Robinson grabbed three wickets in the end without giving up a run, including the crucial removal of Adam Lyth, who managed to stay at the crease for 73 by blocking a ball that seemed to be whispering sweet nothings to his jugular. Leading Division Two is Sussex.

Ben Stokes put in a lot of work for Durham and claimed five wickets in the second innings at Blackpool, but Keaton Jennings' 155 puts Lancashire in control. After crushing the Worcestershire "Pears" to win by 281 runs in three days, the Surrey juggernaut continued to grind on, with Dan Worrall extending his impressive season with a match-high 10-wicket haul.

With six wickets remaining, Matt Critchley (46), Jordan Cox (77), and Essex need 106 more runs to defeat Warwickshire. With three wickets remaining, Glamorgan leads Middlesex by 134 runs with a century from Marnus Labuschagne, while Northamptonshire is leading Derbyshire by 89 runs because of Emilio Gay's unbeaten innings.
