Derbyshire fills Amir’s vacancy by signing Dupavillon

Derbyshire has secured the services of South African seamer Daryn Dupavillon as an overseas player for a major part of the 2024 season. This signing comes in place of Mohammad Amir as his international recall would limit his appearances for the county in the T20 Blast to just six matches. Dupavillon is expected to join the team in time for their County Championship match against Sussex, which starts on May 3, after finishing his commitments with the Dolphins franchise in South African domestic cricket. He will be available across formats until the penultimate Championship fixture of the season in mid-September, as per the club statement.

Dupavillon joins Blair Tickner as the second overseas fast bowler in the Derbyshire squad for the first quarter of the season. Tickner will feature in the Championship and the first eight Blast group games, before Amir replaces him after the T20 World Cup. It should be noted that Amir created confusion last month when he made a sudden return to international cricket, three-and-a-half years after his last appearance for Pakistan. He was originally set to play for Derbyshire as an overseas player but later considered becoming a local player due to his marriage.

This will be Dupavillon's debut in county cricket. Derbyshire's season had a damp start last week, with a four-day washout at home to Gloucestershire. They will be hoping for good weather as they look to take on Glamorgan in Cardiff in the second round of games, starting from Friday.
