Derbyshire's David Lloyd appointed CCC Captain

David Lloyd was confirmed as the captain of Derbyshire ahead of the 2024 tournament, while Samit Patel will lead the white-balling side.

Lloyd joined the club at the end of the 2023 season from Glamorgan, where he was captain in 2022 and 2023. He will now lead Mickey Arthur's side in the County Championship.

Patel is also a newcomer, having spent more than two decades with Nottinghamshire, where he won six major honours, including four in white-ball cricket. He also helped the Trent Rockets to the Men's Hundred title in 2022.

Patel holds the record for most Vitality Blast appearances (232), has the second highest number of wickets in the tournament (208) and is also in the top ten for most runs (4,217). His experience, economical bowling and ability to change a game with the bat continue to make him a key player in T20 competitions around the world.

Lloyd will lead Derbyshire for the first time in the County Championship on Friday 5 April when they host Gloucestershire at The Incora County Ground. Patel will take the captain's bow on Thursday 30 May when the Falcons take on Northants in the Vitality Blast opener.

Head of cricket Mickey Arthur said he is delighted that David and Samit have been confirmed as captains for 2024, both have great experience and have fitted in well with the group.

David will bring an aggressive edge to our red-balling and I think our members and supporters will really enjoy our County Championship cricketing this season.

Samit is one of county cricket's most decorated players and his desire to win is contagious. He will be key to the Vitality Blast this season as he has a very good cricketing mind, especially in the white ball game, and knows what it takes to win trophies.

Derbyshire's aim over the winter has been to bring in proven winners to add to the quality they already had in the squad to make Derbyshire a competitive unit across all formats of the game. As the team looks to challenge for 2024, Lloyd is looking forward to working with our captains throughout the season.

He is really honoured to be captaining the red ball team. Derbyshire has a special group of players, coaching staff and people around the club, it's an exciting opportunity he couldn't turn down.

Patel states he is also very honoured and proud to be leading the white ball side. He looks forward to working with the fantastic team he is putting together.

The brand of cricket the teams want to play will hopefully attract fans, who play a huge part in teams' winning. Throughout the year they will definitely need them. It's a great challenge for everyone.
