England's New Fast Bowling Duo Shines in Test Series

In cricket, having one 90mph bowler is a great asset, but having two is even better. England's revamped Test bowling attack showcased its potential in overseas conditions that often neutralise medium-pace seamers. Both Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson acknowledged the guidance of James Anderson, who retired one match into the series against the West Indies and continued to serve as a mentor.

Wood bowled some of the fastest overs ever recorded by an Englishman during the second Test. Although he initially struggled with figures of 0 for 31 from eight overs on the third day, a conversation with Anderson helped him focus on his technique rather than the outcomes. This advice led to a remarkable spell where Wood took 5 for 9 in six overs, using rapid reverse swing to help secure a 10-wicket victory for England.

Wood expressed that he had been overthinking his lack of wickets, but Anderson, along with other staff members like Jeetan Patel, helped him concentrate on his bowling process. This shift in mindset allowed him to regain confidence and perform at his best.

Atkinson, who was named Player of the Series for his 22 wickets at an average of 16.22, also benefited from Anderson's mentorship. Atkinson took 12 wickets on his debut at Lord's and then took the new ball in Anderson's absence. He spoke about how Anderson's advice, though often subtle, gave him confidence.

Atkinson impressed with his pace and movement, using a scrambled seam technique. While not as fast as Wood, who consistently bowled at speeds of 93-97mph, Atkinson aimed to increase his speed over longer spells. He had adjusted his run-up, extending it by three meters to improve his consistency at the crease, and had opted out of an IPL contract to focus on his technique.

Both Wood and Atkinson aimed to bowl faster for extended periods, seeing this as crucial for their development and effectiveness on flatter pitches. Wood, who had worked on his ability to swing the Dukes ball as he aged, emphasised that his primary role in the team was to bowl fast and create opportunities. He expressed pride in maintaining his speed across back-to-back games, attributing his improved performance to his consistent pace.

Wood and Atkinson's performances are promising signs for England's fast bowling future, particularly in overseas conditions where pace can be a significant advantage. The team's focus now shifts to the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, with both bowlers keen to build on their recent successes.
