Ian Holland played a pivotal role in Leicestershire’s eight-wicket triumph over Yorkshire in a rain-affected Metro Bank One-Day Cup match at Scarborough, keeping their title defence hopes alive. Leicestershire successfully chased down a revised target of 150 in 22 overs, thanks to Holland's contributions with both bat and ball.
Holland, who opened the bowling, delivered an economical spell, taking 2 for 39 from his 10 overs. He later set the tone for the chase with a quick-fire 42 off 25 balls. This victory marks Leicestershire's fourth win in six matches, propelling them into the top three in Group B.
Yorkshire, after being put in to bat, posted 236 for 7 from their 50 overs. Dom Bess and Matthew Revis rescued the Vikings from a precarious position at 118 for 6, sharing a crucial 112-run partnership. Bess scored a career-best 60, while Revis contributed 55 not out. However, their efforts were overshadowed by the performances of Holland and Leicestershire’s captain, Lewis Hill.
Hill, who remained unbeaten on 71 from 54 balls, including four sixes, played a commanding innings to steer his team to victory. His partnership with Ajinkya Rahane (28 not out) ensured that Leicestershire reached the target with 2.2 overs to spare.
Leicestershire’s bowlers had earlier put Yorkshire on the back foot, reducing them to 79 for 4 within the first 25 overs. Holland struck early, dismissing Fin Bean and Shan Masood, while Tom Scriven and debutant Alex Green also claimed two wickets each. Green’s dismissal of George Hill, followed by Scriven’s removal of Luxton, further dented Yorkshire’s progress.
Despite the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method favouring Leicestershire, the chase was not straightforward under overcast conditions. Nevertheless, Holland’s aggressive start, including a boundary off the third ball of the innings, set the momentum. Even after his dismissal at 62 for 2, Hill took charge, striking two sixes and bringing up his half-century off just 37 balls.
Hill and Rahane's unbroken 90-run stand for the third wicket sealed the win, with Leicestershire crossing the finish line comfortably.
