Matthew Mott Dismissed as England's Limited-Overs Head Coach

Matthew Mott has been dismissed from his position as England's limited-overs head coach after the team relinquished two World Cup titles within the past year. Jos Buttler retains the captaincy, while Marcus Trescothick, a former Somerset teammate of Buttler, has been appointed as interim head coach until the end of the summer. The search for Mott's permanent replacement is underway.

Mott, an Australian, served as head coach for just over two years. Despite a promising start, including winning the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, his tenure was marred by disappointing performances in subsequent tournaments. England's defense of their 50-over World Cup title in India was particularly lackluster, with the team securing only three wins and finishing seventh out of ten teams. In the T20 World Cup held in June, England barely reached the semi-finals before being soundly defeated by India, the eventual champions.

Mott, who still had nearly two years left on his contract worth over £200,000 annually, will receive a significant severance package. His tenure followed a successful period under the leadership of Eoin Morgan, and he was initially brought in alongside Test coach Brendon McCullum. However, challenges in team dynamics and scheduling hindered his ability to replicate the success he achieved with the Australian women's team. While the ECB's official statement indicated that Mott "stepped down," Managing Director Rob Key noted the decision was made because the team needed a "new direction."
