Michael Vaughan has spearheaded the tributes to Graham Thorpe following the former England batter's death at the age of 55.
Thorpe, who was a key figure in England's Test lineup for over a decade, scored 16 centuries and maintained an average close to 45 across exactly 100 Test matches.
Renowned as one of England's most dependable batsmen during a challenging era, Thorpe excelled in diverse conditions against top-tier bowling attacks. His remarkable performance in Karachi in 2000, where he guided England to victory in near darkness, ended Pakistan's 34-match unbeaten home streak.
Thorpe's career concluded just before the 2005 Ashes, as the rise of Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen edged him out. His final Test century was under Vaughan’s captaincy against South Africa in December 2004.
Vaughan paid homage to his former teammate on X, expressing gratitude for Thorpe’s guidance throughout his career. He praised Thorpe as a great player and teammate, lamenting his untimely passing and honouring him as an England cricket legend. Vaughan extended his condolences to Thorpe’s family and friends.
Ronnie Irani, a former England all-rounder, expressed his sorrow, sharing that those who knew Thorpe would be heartbroken. Irani recalled Thorpe as a fun-loving friend who, along with Phil Tufnell, welcomed him warmly on his first England tour. Irani cherished their unforgettable times together and celebrated Thorpe's prowess as a batsman.
After retiring, Thorpe transitioned to coaching, serving as England's batting coach during two separate periods and earning immense respect from the players.
Current England opener Ben Duckett, also a left-hander, described Thorpe as one of his childhood heroes and expressed his sadness over his passing. Duckett sent his thoughts to Thorpe's friends and family during this difficult time.
England's Test captain Ben Stokes shared a poignant tribute with four heart emojis and a photo of himself wearing a shirt with Thorpe’s name and England cap number, which he had worn for the toss against New Zealand at Lord’s after Thorpe fell ill in 2022.
Former Sri Lanka and Surrey batsman Kumar Sangakkara added his tribute on X, mourning Thorpe’s passing and extending his sympathies to his family, loved ones, and friends. He described Thorpe as a great man and legend who was taken too soon.
