Pat Cummins Anticipates Increased Role

Pat Cummins expects Cameron Green to shoulder a heavier bowling workload during Australia's upcoming Test series against India, with the team's allrounders poised to play a crucial role in maintaining the stamina of the primary pace attack over five Tests in just over seven weeks.

Last season, Australia managed to field an unchanged frontline attack across the seven Tests against Pakistan, West Indies, and New Zealand. The brevity of these matches—none extending into a fifth day and only three requiring more than 78 overs per innings—helped keep Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood in top form. Green, who rejoined the squad against West Indies following David Warner's retirement, provided an additional bowling option but was only called upon for 42 overs across four Tests.

Cummins acknowledged the importance of the all-rounders, noting that while they haven't been needed as much as anticipated, their presence has been invaluable. He suggested that this summer's matches against India could present different challenges, leading to a greater reliance on Green and Mitch Marsh. Cummins pointed out that Green, who began his career in Shield cricket primarily as a bowler, is now more mature and might be leaned on more heavily in the upcoming series.

Green, who has claimed 35 wickets at an average of 35.31 in Test matches, made a triumphant return to the side earlier this year, scoring an unbeaten 174 against New Zealand in Wellington. As Australia prepares to face India, there remains some uncertainty about the structure of their top six, particularly with ongoing discussions about Steven Smith's role as an opener. However, barring any injuries, it is almost certain that Green will be joined by Mitchell Marsh in the top six.

Cummins highlighted the advantage of having both Green and Marsh in the top six, emphasising that they secure their spots based on batting alone, which is a significant luxury. He noted that while Nathan Lyon can handle a substantial number of overs, having a fifth bowling option with Green and Marsh adds valuable depth to the team. Cummins stated that the top six should always be selected primarily for their batting capabilities.

Cummins also shared that his fellow bowlers appreciate having a bowling captain, as it helps manage their workloads more effectively. He mentioned that while his teammates might not express this directly to him, there is a mutual understanding and trust built over years of playing together.

Currently, Cummins is in the early stages of a two-month break from bowling, having been rested for the limited-overs tour of the UK. He is focusing on fitness to prepare for another demanding Test cricket period, with Australia heading to Sri Lanka shortly after the India series. Cummins expressed his eagerness to participate in the ODI series against Pakistan in early November and possibly one Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales. However, he indicated that it's unlikely he will feature for Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

Australia has a strong pool of fast-bowling talent to call upon if needed, with Scott Boland leading the charge behind the main trio. Michael Neser toured New Zealand, while Lance Morris, who was part of the squad last summer, is currently recovering from a back stress reaction. Xavier Bartlett, who impressed in white-ball cricket, earned a central contract earlier this year, and selectors remain hopeful that Jhye Richardson can overcome his injury setbacks.
