Scotland's Michael Jones Open to Australia's Help in Eliminating England from T20 World Cup

Scottish opener Michael Jones is open to the idea of receiving assistance from Australia in their quest to eliminate defending champions England from the T20 World Cup. He even humorously suggested that Australia could throw the ball to David Warner.

Jones's attention was immediately caught when Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood mentioned during a press conference that it might be in Australia's "best interests" to influence the outcome of their final group game against Scotland in a way that would ensure England's exit based on net run-rate.

Although the International Cricket Council (ICC) has clear rules against manipulating match outcomes or run rates for strategic or tactical reasons—offences that could result in a two-match suspension for the captain—Jones expressed his amusement at the idea. Reflecting on Hazlewood's comments, he mentioned, "I was watching it live and couldn’t help but laugh," recalling the provocative nature of the remarks.

Jones also remembered when former Australia captain Tim Paine humorously suggested that they should play with a weakened side. He admitted he isn't well-acquainted with the Australian players but wouldn't mind having a conversation to see if something could be arranged. He noted the intense rivalry between England and Australia, saying it would be quite amusing if Australia opted to open the bowling with someone like David Warner.

While Jones’s smile indicated he was taking the comments in stride, it aligned with England head coach Matthew Mott's belief that Hazlewood's comments were made in jest.

As a batsman with big aspirations, evidenced by his unbeaten 45 in the rain-affected game against England, Jones is prepared to face Australia at their strongest. He expressed his readiness and eagerness to compete against Australia's full force, stating that he and his team aim for the best possible outcome, but personally, he looks forward to testing himself against top-tier competition.

Jones acknowledged the high level of professionalism and thorough preparation that the Australian team is known for. He expressed confidence that they will approach the game with the same intensity they bring to every match in every tournament.

He concluded by almost hoping Australia would field their strongest side on Saturday, as it would give Scotland the chance to prove themselves and demonstrate their capabilities to the cricketing world.
