Sri Lanka’s Test Hopes Rest on Experience

As Sri Lanka gears up for their Test series against England, history isn't exactly on their side. They've lost seven of their last eight encounters, and it’s been over a decade since their last win—a memorable triumph featuring three players from the current squad. The key to their chances this time lies in their ability to put runs on the board.

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s interim head coach and a trailblazer in aggressive cricket long before Bazball became a trend, knows England well. He’s supported by Ian Bell, a former England batsman now serving as Sri Lanka’s batting coach. The experience of seasoned players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, and Dinesh Chandimal—veterans of the 2014 and 2016 tours—combined with Dhananjaya de Silva’s solid Test record since taking on the captaincy, will be crucial.

Sri Lanka's bowling attack is well-equipped, particularly in the seam department, with Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando both bringing county cricket experience. On the spin front, Prabath Jayasuriya has been a standout, with only Nathan Lyon and R Ashwin claiming more wickets since his debut in 2022. However, his challenge will be adapting to conditions outside Sri Lanka, as his overseas record pales in comparison to his performances at home.

England, meanwhile, faces its own challenges. The team has been hit by injuries, with Zak Crawley sidelined due to a fractured finger and Ben Stokes out with a hamstring tear. As a result, England will field a first-time Test opener in Dan Lawrence and an inexperienced captain in Ollie Pope. Stokes will be present in the dressing room, but his absence on the field is likely to impact the team, particularly the batting order. Matthew Potts has been named as Stokes’ replacement, earning only his second cap since the summer of 2022.

The disruptions in England's lineup, compounded by the need to call up Olly Stone after Dillon Pennington’s injury, suggest that this series might not be as straightforward as it seems. Sri Lanka, unbeaten in six London Tests since 1998, could capitalise on this instability, especially if they manage to navigate the first Test unscathed. For the Sri Lankan side, this series is not just another challenge—it’s an opportunity to make their mark in England during the height of summer.

Form Guide:

- England: WWWLL (last five Tests, most recent first)

- Sri Lanka: WWWLL

In the Spotlight:

Dan Lawrence, known for his flamboyant stroke play, returns to the England side after biding his time as a reserve batter. He impressed with a lively 91 in Barbados two games before being dropped at the start of the Stokes-McCullum era. Now, with just seven first-class innings as an opener, Lawrence is eager to seize this opportunity, having waited for his chance in the Bazball era.

On the other side, Angelo Mathews brings a wealth of experience to Sri Lanka’s middle order. At 37, he remains a vital figure in the Test squad, especially as his role in limited-overs cricket diminishes. Mathews was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s last victory over England, scoring a magnificent 160 in the 2014 Headingley Test. With an average of 47.88 in England, including a spot on the Lord’s honours board, Mathews will be key to Sri Lanka’s hopes of pressuring England once again.
