Positives and Challenges for AUS and IND After Gabba Stalemate

The third Test at the Gabba concluded with both Australia and India reflecting on key takeaways. Each side has endured highs and lows in the Border-Gavaskar series, with a win apiece and vulnerabilities exposed along the way.

Australia found reassurance in Steve Smith’s return to form and their overall control with bat and ball. Meanwhile, India’s resilience shone as they battled through challenging conditions, salvaging a draw and reigniting momentum ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance in sparking an Australian collapse provided an unexpected boost.

However, India faced a major setback with Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement announcement. Despite being sidelined at the Gabba, Ashwin’s stellar record, including 537 Test wickets and consistent success against Australia, made him a valuable asset. His departure leaves India grappling with spin options, as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar have struggled for impact.

Australia, too, confronts challenges with injuries testing their experienced core. The absence of Josh Hazlewood and limited overs from Mitch Marsh underscore concerns about their ageing lineup enduring a packed schedule.

Batting inconsistencies also linger for both sides. While Smith’s century offers relief for Australia, pressure mounts on veterans like Usman Khawaja and Rohit Sharma. Turning pitches in Melbourne and Sydney may yet shift the series dynamic, providing spinners an opportunity to shine.

With the series finely balanced, the upcoming matches promise further drama as both teams navigate form, fitness, and strategic adjustments.
