AUS Contemplates Changes as IND Gains Momentum Ahead of Test

Australia’s renowned bowling quartet of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon, boasting a combined 1,443 Test wickets, has been central to the team’s success. Yet, their effectiveness against India is under scrutiny. Despite playing 31 Tests together, including nine against India at home, they have secured only two wins in those encounters, with India dominating the rest.

The upcoming day-night Test in Adelaide could bring further challenges, particularly with Hazlewood sidelined due to injury. While Hazlewood’s absence disrupts Australia’s attack, it also presents an opportunity to introduce a less familiar bowler, potentially unsettling India’s batters. Scott Boland, who performed admirably in the World Test Championship final against India, offers such a wildcard option. Other choices like Brendan Doggett or Sean Abbott could also serve as surprise elements.

However, Starc and Lyon’s performance under the pink ball, where they are among the top wicket-takers, adds complexity to the decision. The pair played pivotal roles in dismantling India for 36 in a previous Adelaide day-night Test, highlighting their value in this format.

On the batting front, Australia faces mounting pressure. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are working to regain form after a disappointing Perth Test, while India, buoyed by Rohit Sharma’s return, exudes confidence. With both teams grappling with different challenges, the Adelaide clash promises to test Australia’s depth and resilience while showcasing India’s growing dominance.
