IND Secure ODI Series as Deol's Maiden Ton Overshadows Matthews’ Heroics
In a high-scoring clash, India clinched the ODI series against West Indies with a commanding 115-run victory, highlighted by Harleen Deol's maiden century and a collective batting effort. West Indies’ Hayley Matthews also impressed with a superb hundred but lacked the necessary support to chase down India’s imposing total of 358 for 5, their joint-highest in ODIs.
West Indies, chasing 359, adopted a cautious approach, especially early on, managing to bat out three maidens in the opening seven overs. Hayley Matthews stood out with an exceptional knock, reaching her seventh ODI century off 99 balls. Her innings were a blend of precise stroke-making against spin and aggression against pace, but her teammates struggled to provide meaningful partnerships. A 112-run stand with Shemaine Campbelle, who scored 38, was the only other notable contribution as the team folded for 238.
Earlier, Deol anchored India’s innings with a remarkable knock at No.3, scoring her first international hundred off 98 balls. Dropped early on 20, she capitalised on the opportunity, combining with Jemimah Rodrigues for a blistering 116-run partnership off 71 balls. Rodrigues dazzled with her innovative stroke play, scoring a half-century off just 34 balls.
Openers Smriti Mandhana and debutant Pratika Rawal also set a solid platform with a century stand, contributing half-centuries each. Rawal, in particular, impressed with her all-round performance, scoring 76 and taking two wickets. India’s strong finish, amassing 184 runs in the final 20 overs, left West Indies chasing an insurmountable target, sealing the series with a game to spare.
