Eshan Malinga Gets Maiden ODI Call-Up for NZ Tour

Fast bowler Eshan Malinga has been rewarded for his impressive performances in 2024 with a maiden inclusion in Sri Lanka's 17-man ODI squad for their upcoming series in New Zealand. His selection comes alongside the return of pacer Lahiru Kumara, who replaces Dilshan Madushanka, while Nuwanidu Fernando has been chosen over Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Malinga’s rise began with a standout performance in a national fast-bowling competition in 2019, where he clocked 141 kph. Since making his domestic debut in 2022, he has taken 20 wickets in 12 List A matches at an average of 25.15. His consistency in 2024 led to stints with the Jaffna Kings in the LPL and a contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2025.

The squad remains largely unchanged from the one that faced New Zealand at home recently. Malinga's inclusion, however, comes as Madushanka’s form has dipped following his 2023 World Cup success. In contrast, the batting lineup remains steady, with captain Charith Asalanka leading experienced players like Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. Nuwanidu Fernando’s aggressive approach has earned him a spot over Samarawickrama, whose recent form has been underwhelming.

The bowling unit includes a mix of pace and spin options, featuring Asitha Fernando, Maheesh Theekshana, and Wanindu Hasaranga. Sri Lanka’s tour begins with T20Is on December 28, followed by ODIs starting January 5 in Wellington, continuing in Hamilton and Auckland on January 8 and 11.
