England advanced to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup after Australia narrowly defeated a resilient Scotland in St Lucia.

Earlier on Saturday, England's rain-affected victory over Namibia left Scotland needing a win to progress, while Australia had already secured their place in the next stage.

In a tense chase, Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis both scored half-centuries, guiding Mitchell Marsh’s team to reach their target of 181 with just two balls remaining.

Throughout the tournament, Scotland has consistently impressed, and they continued to perform admirably against the formidable Australian side. Despite losing Michael Jones early for just two runs, Brandon McMullen led a strong recovery with a brilliant 60 off 34 balls, helping Scotland to post the highest score against Australia by an associate team.

McMullen, along with George Munsey (35), built a solid partnership of 89 for the second wicket. Captain Richie Berrington then added 42 off 31 balls to set a competitive total for Scotland.

Australia’s reply saw early setbacks with David Warner, Marsh, and Glenn Maxwell falling for low scores, leaving Scotland in a strong position to cause an upset. However, Travis Head played a strategically timed innings, and with the powerful support of Stoinis, the momentum swung back in Australia’s favour.

Tim David sealed the victory with a commanding six, crushing Scotland's hopes and ensuring England's continued defence of their World Cup title. The presence of more teams from the International Cricket Council's associate members has enriched this World Cup, with Scotland exemplifying this spirit throughout their campaign in the Caribbean.

Scotland came close to an upset against England in their opening match before rain intervened, and they convincingly defeated both Namibia and Oman with impressive run chases.

Brandon McMullen, batting at number three, has been a standout player. The South Africa-born right-hander showcased his skill against top-tier bowlers, consistently clearing the boundary with ease and scoring all around the pitch. Given his performances, it seems likely that a franchise or county cricket opportunity is on the horizon for the 24-year-old.

Despite limited opportunities to play against full ICC members, Scotland has proven they can compete at the highest level. They look forward to hosting Australia for three T20s in Edinburgh in September, hoping their recent strong performances will lead to more matches against top teams.

He viewed the match as a valuable learning experience despite the disappointment of not securing a win.
