ENG Tighten Grip as SA Falter Under New-Ball Pressure

South Africa’s promising start faltered on the second day of the one-off Test in Bloemfontein as England’s bowlers, led by Lauren Bell, seized control. Despite half-centuries from Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp, and Sune Luus, South Africa collapsed for 281, trailing England’s first-innings total by 114 runs.

Bell’s standout performance (4 for 49) was complemented by disciplined contributions from Lauren Filer, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, and Nat Sciver-Brunt. South Africa’s batting lineup crumbled, losing 7 wickets for just 44 runs after two solid partnerships—92 runs between Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen and a record 99-run stand between Kapp and Luus—had initially stabilised their innings.

Wolvaardt looked assured during her 65 but fell lbw to Sophie Ecclestone after lunch in a contentious decision, highlighting the absence of DRS. Kapp counter-attacked effectively but was bowled by a brilliant delivery from MacDonald-Gay just after tea. England’s bowlers capitalised on the new ball, with Bell cleaning up the tail to wrap up South Africa's innings.

England’s second innings began under floodlights, with storm clouds adding to the tension. Ayanda Hlubi struck early, dismissing Maia Bouchier for a duck. Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight, however, steadied the innings, extending England’s lead to 145 by stumps.

With two days remaining, England’s commanding position leaves South Africa with an uphill battle to salvage the match.
