England's failure to bat together as a team

Without Joe Root's final innings of 84, England would have been the first team since 1959 to play a five-Test series without at least two players scoring two or more 50s.

Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett joined a select list of England players with a 150-plus score but no other half-centuries in a Test series (eight innings minimum). His 196 in the first Test is also the fifth-highest by an opener not out in both innings of a Test in the same series.

Throughout the series, none of England's top eight reached 50 in any of the 10 innings. This marks only the second time England has had a sequence of 10 consecutive Test innings without two top-eight fifties; the other was back in 1905-06.
