Glamorgan's new CEO, Dan Cherry, aims for a 'fresh start' following criticism from former players
New chief executive Dan Cherry admits that some of the criticism Glamorgan have faced in recent times has been justified but he hopes this year will mark a new beginning for the county.
Glamorgan has received negative feedback from several former players, with Tom Cullen accusing them of cronyism at the end of last season.
A group of former players and coaches, including Roger Davis, Alan Lewis Jones, Kevin Lyons, and John Steele, have written to chairman Mark Rhydderch-Roberts expressing their concerns about the team's poor performances and lack of homegrown players in the first team.
Glamorgan has undergone significant changes on and off the field ahead of the new season starting on Friday.
Grant Bradburn has replaced Matthew Maynard as head coach. Sam Northeast has replaced David Lloyd as County Championship captain and Cherry has replaced Hugh Morris as chief executive.
Glamorgan, who have been in Division Two of the County Championship since 2006, have experienced lean spells in recent years.
They missed out on promotion to the County Championship last season. They also failed to reach the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup and T20 Blast.
Maynard, Morris, and Lloyd departed at the end of the 2023 campaign, while star player Michael Neser joined Hampshire in February.
Strong criticism has been prompted by upheaval off the field and disappointing results on the pitch.
In September, Cullen, the One-Day Cup-winning wicketkeeper, complained about a 'cosy' and 'cliquey' environment, as well as an 'enabling of a drinking culture' and a level of 'mediocrity that just gets accepted year after year'.
Simon Jones, the ex-Glamorgan and England fast bowler, described Cullen's interview with BBC Sport Wales as a 'tough read', adding that there were 'big changes needed' at the Welsh county.
The group of former Glamorgan players - Davis, Jones, Lyons, and Steele - have made over 1,000 combined appearances for the county. They wrote to Rhydderch-Roberts to express their concerns and received a response from the chairman in January.
