Joe Root Dedicates Century to Late Graham Thorpe

Joe Root dedicated his 33rd Test century, which ties the record, to his long-time batting mentor Graham Thorpe, who passed away this month at the age of 55. After reaching the milestone, Root pointed to the sky, honouring Thorpe's influence on his career, stating that he "definitely wouldn't be where I am now" without his guidance.

Root, whose innings of 143 helped England reach 358 for 7 against Sri Lanka at Lord's, expressed his gratitude for the impact Thorpe had on his development as a cricketer. "I've been fortunate to work with many great people—players, coaches, mentors—and Thorpey was one of those who gave me so much," Root said.

Reflecting on his connection with Thorpe, Root recalled how Thorpe had been instrumental in his early career, pushing for his inclusion in the England Lions before he had even scored a first-class hundred. "He saw something in me and encouraged me to work on my game, especially against spin and pace, to prepare for the challenges at the international level," Root explained.

Thorpe, who is widely regarded as one of England's finest batters, took his own life earlier this month following a battle with "major depression and anxiety," as described by his family. Thorpe had spent much of his post-playing career with the England setup, and was a strong advocate for Root's early promotion to the Test team at the age of 21.

Root first encountered Thorpe during a second-team game in 2010 and soon after began working closely with him, particularly on improving his technique against spin. Thorpe played a pivotal role in Root's selection for England's tour of India in 2012, where Root made his Test debut.

Root accentuated how Thorpe had been a constant presence throughout his career, providing valuable advice and support during both good times and bad. "You're always evolving as a player, and you need people to bounce ideas off, who can relieve pressure and guide you through challenges. Thorpey was that person for me," Root said.

Root concluded by expressing his deep appreciation for Thorpe's influence, calling his century a "small tribute" to someone who meant a great deal to him. "It’s nothing compared to what he gave me, but it’s a small thank you," Root added.
