Jofra Archer's Triumphant Return Impresses Jos Buttler

England captain Jos Buttler expressed his delight at Jofra Archer’s impressive comeback from injury during the T20 World Cup. Archer, 29, who had been sidelined for over a year due to an elbow injury, returned last month and has since taken five wickets in the tournament.

Archer’s recent performance, taking 1-15 against Namibia, was instrumental in helping England secure a win, despite the interruptions caused by rain. This victory positioned them favourably to advance to the Super 8 stage, a spot ultimately confirmed by Australia’s dramatic victory over Scotland.

Buttler shared that they had been monitoring the weather closely during the Namibia match, noting that Archer was relaxed and even napping on the bench, indicating his good mental state. Buttler remarked on Archer's return to international cricket, stating that he was thrilled to see him back in the England jersey and competing at such a high level.

Having last played for England in March 2023, Archer’s return marked the end of a prolonged battle with an elbow injury compounded by a back stress fracture. These issues had kept him out of the game for the majority of the past three years. At the World Cup, Archer claimed a wicket in each completed match and boasted the best economy rate among England’s bowlers, who had participated in all their games.

Buttler praised Archer’s performances, noting that he had exceeded his expectations in terms of recovery and performance level. Buttler mentioned that Archer probably had high expectations for himself as well.

Following their win in Antigua, England's path to the Super 8s was assured once Australia defeated Scotland. Although Scotland played exceptionally well, Australia, already secured a place in the next stage, successfully chased down a target of 181 with just two balls remaining.

With this outcome, England is set to face off against the United States, South Africa, and the co-hosts, West Indies, in their upcoming matches. Their next challenge is against the West Indies, scheduled for Thursday at 01:30 BST.

Buttler reflected on the tense moments in Antigua when rain threatened to abandon the match, a scenario that would have eliminated England regardless of the result of the Scotland-Australia game. He commended his team for their composed response to the situation and highlighted the calming presence of Kieron Pollard, a former West Indies all-rounder and part of England's coaching staff for the tournament. Pollard’s experience and relaxed demeanour helped the team manage the pressure.

On Sunday, the England team travelled to St Lucia but remained uncertain about the fitness of Liam Livingstone, who had injured his side while batting against Namibia. They await further updates on his condition as they prepare for the critical matches ahead.
