Junction Oval Stand Renamed in Honour of Shane Warne’s Legacy

Cricket Victoria and the St Kilda Cricket Club have renamed a historic grandstand at Melbourne’s Junction Oval after the late Shane Warne, recognising his impactful contributions to Victorian cricket and his home club, St Kilda. This heritage-listed stand, originally dedicated to Australian rules footballer Kevin Murray, has been renamed with Murray’s support; his name now appears on a stand at Brunswick Street Oval in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Though the MCG renamed its southern stand after Warne during his state funeral in 2022, the process to rename Junction Oval’s western stand took additional time due to its heritage status. The dedication ceremony occurred before a One-Day Cup match between Victoria and New South Wales, attended by Warne’s father, Keith, and his daughters, Summer and Brooke, along with Australian players Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, and Glenn Maxwell.

Cricket Victoria also opened a Shane Warne exhibition at the ground’s northern end, displaying memorabilia from Warne’s career—much of it contributed by his father. The exhibition is free for visitors.

Keith Warne expressed his gratitude at the unveiling, saying it was a proud day for the Warne family to have the stand named in Shane’s honour. He shared that Shane made his first-class debut for Victoria at Junction Oval in 1991 and that some of his fondest early cricketing memories were with St Kilda Cricket Club on this very ground. Warne’s father noted that this tribute further cements his legacy, keeping his memory close to the club and community he loved.
